Music

Though currently we don’t have a choir, the congregation enjoys singing, appreciates the role of music in worship, and dreams of a future expanded music program.  Our two organists and summer guitarist provide a wide-range of instrumental music and hymns from several sources. Our worship is enhanced occasionally by cello, flute, or clarinet, as well as guest vocalists.

Playing the OrganOur Organ
The organ, which sits in an organ loft, was built by Hilborne L. Roosevelt in 1884 and retains the original tracker action and slider wind chests.  Mid-20th century modifications increased the number of pipes from 258 to 1600.  Though the organ is regularly tuned and remains playable, it is quirky and needs major work or replacement in the near future.

Our Piano
A gift from Grace Church, our Grotian Steinweg 7’4” piano is a fine 19th century-style Instrument made in Braunsweig, Germany.  Its construction, tone, and touch are characteristic of the best pianos of that era and region.  The piano, which normally sits on the south side of the nave, can be moved to the center of the aisle at the foot of the chancel steps. It is tuned regularly and work was done on the damper system in 2023, though more work could be done to reveal its full potential.  The piano is often used to support worship and is available for concert use.

Concerts and Performances
St. Paul’s is pleased to host concerts and other special performances in the church.  The sanctuary seats 200 people and is especially well-suited to small or medium-sized instrumental or vocal ensembles.  If you are interested, please reach out to stpaulsstockbridge@gmail.com.
